What is Regular Student Employment?

Regular student employment (non-work-study) is not part of the financial aid package and is available to any student. There are very few regular student employment positions on campus.

Biology Lab Technician-Animal Room

  • Openings: No
  • Hours per week: 3-6
  • Duties: The animal room lab technician is responsible for feeding, cleaning, and caring for the animals (pine snake, walking sticks, Death’s Head cockroaches, snails, clams, and crabs) housed in the Biology Department’s animal room. This job also includes helping with lab set up and take down.

Biology Lab Technician-Greenhouse

  • Hours per week: 3-6
  • Duties: The greenhouse lab technician is responsible for watering, cleaning, and caring for the plants housed in the Biology Department’s greenhouse. This job also includes helping with lab set up and take down.

Biology Lab Technician-Glassware Cleaning and Lab Maintenance

Cafeteria/Kitchen Assistant

  • Openings: Yes
  • Hours per week: Variable, M-F between 7:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.; weekends between 11:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
  • Duties: Various positions, including cooking, dish room, cash register and clean up. Desire to learn food handling techniques required.

Tutor- Academic Support Center

  • Openings: Yes
  • Hours per week: 1-12 (flexible) during open lab hours of M-Th 9AM-4PM, F 9AM-12PM 
  • Description: Peer tutors offer academic support to UWMC students in two ways: (1) On a walk-in basis in Room 086 by students seeking help in math and chemistry, and (2) through 1-on-1 sessions in a specific subject arranged by the Tutor Coordinator.  Tutors assist students with understanding assignments, procedures, and content in math and other courses.  This job also includes documentation during tutoring hours related to room use and routine closing tasks. 
  • Qualifications/Skills Required:   Student tutors should have a strong academic background in math or the subject area willing to tutor (e.g., chemistry, physics, biology, economics, business, psychology), plus a willingness to share knowledge and study tips to help others succeed and become more confident, independent learners.  Student tutors need to be reliable and possess maturity to work responsibly with minimum supervision.  They should also possess a willingness to ensure appropriate and effective use of 086 for its funded purpose.  Information and guidance will be provided; what is needed is a tutor's expertise in one or more subject areas and a willingness to share that knowledge to support UWMC peers in a relaxed yet academic environment.
