UWMC Bookstore Policies
History, Relationship to UW- Marathon County
The University Bookstore was incorporated as a cooperative in June 1974, to
provide bookstore services at UWMC. It is a business entity separate from the
University, but operates according to University directions and specifications.
It is managed by a board of directors consisting of two students, four faculty,
one member of the administration and two community members.
Goals and Objectives
Financial viability – the bookstore receives no subsidy or monetary assistance
from the University so it must sustain itself on its own operating income.
Zero Profitability – pricing policies are determined by revenue and expense
projects to maintain a break-even operation.
Reduce book and supply costs/increased buyback prices – the ultimate goal is
saving to students.
Present Policies
New books are sold at 3% below publishers suggested selling prices. Used books
are sold at 70% of the new selling price. School supplies, art supplies and
cloth goods are marked up 20% -25%.
NOTES:
* The institution, not the bookstore, determines the book purchase system at
UWMC.
* Credit card purchases are available (MasterCard, Visa, and Discover).
* The bookstore is a business. Refund, return and buyback policies are business
decisions because they affect the financial viability of the store.
* The buyback service is available at the end of each fall and spring semester
during final exams to students who wish to resell books according to “Present
Polices.” There is also a buyback program available online year-round
through the
MBS Textbook Exchange. Students may dispose of their books in other manners.
* If there is any chance of class changes, students are advised to refrain from
writing names in those books—a name written in a book makes it used. This advice
must be considered along with the need for safekeeping.
* When purchasing books, students must know course, section numbers, to avoid
purchasing wrong ones.
* Textbooks will be available during the first three weeks of classes – after
that, unsold books are returned to publishers.
* A $10.00 charge, plus additional bank fees, is assessed when a check is
returned by the bank on which it is drawn.
